Marketing
had only recently begun to shift from horse races to a widespread attention
earned through beer advertisements. By the time beer brewing reached its
apotheosis during prohibition, it was all but impossible to get a decent
distribution network up in the interior of the US. That's because the
government banned the importation of alcoholic beverages, particularly beer, at
the height of the panic following the catastrophic Oktoberfest of 18ZE.
By the
time the National Beer Wholesalers Association got together in Ottawa, Canada
in May ofock & Thomas in June of that year, the ban on imported beer had
already been enacted. By then, the first of many beer brewing boxes had already
been manufactured. By the time National Beer Wholesalers Association of Canada
(NBWA) got together in Ottawa, in December of that year, the possibility of
importing beer from abroad was becoming more remote.
As it
happened, however, none of the members of the first committee responsible for
the development of the emblem recognized the need to market beer in a uniquely
Canadian way. And so, the traditional beer bottle was born. At first, it was
simply a cardboard box. But as demand increased among Canadians of all ages for
this wonderfully versatile beverage, a few of those involved with the design
began thinking of ways to make the box more like the authentic bottle. When
that became possible, the possibility of truly Canadian merchandise opened up
to a whole new field of possibilities.
Today, a
custom container often contains either an illustration or a portrait of a
Canadian hero or a picture of the famed Olympic Park that housed the Vancouver
Olympics of 1996. Another popular motif is the evergreen Maple Leaf. These are
two classic symbols of Canada and represent enduring elements of our history
and identity. Many of these boxes contain a soft toy version of a maple leaf, a
stuffed bear of an even more cherished creature, or a collection of greeting
cards or other small gifts.
The demand
for custom beer boxes has, of course, been greatly boosted by the arrival of
the world-wide-web. There are many websites on which can order these and other
beer-related products. There are also many conventions and exhibitions where
beer of every type is sold. Those events feature booths displaying everything
from handcrafted to generic beer mugs. A great deal of advertising is often
displayed on these booths.
Of course,
the most famous way of finding such merchandise is to visit the various establishments
themselves and speak to the shop keepers in the hope of finding a custom box
that is exactly the right size and shape for the beer you wish to pour into it.
If that proves impossible, many bar and restaurant owners will be glad to make
your order. Most of them will not mind devoting one or two hours of their
latter days to your special request. And who knows - if they like your beer so
much that they offer it to you at a cheaper price than what a distributor would
charge, it could just be the beginning of a long and profitable business
relationship.
